Must-Haves when Traveling with Baby

What to pack when traveling with baby | Pretty Polymath

For 4th of July, my family went on our first vacation to Alabama. This meant taking my 2 month old baby on her first plane ride! I was super nervous and worried that I would have THAT baby that screamed throughout the entire flight. Luckily, she slept through the entire flight (both ways!) without too much fussing much to my relief. Here are some of the things I brought with me that made my life easier during our trip!

  1. Buttons Medium Wet Bagmy family is using cloth diapers, so it was great to have a travel-sized wet bag for her dirty diapers or wet clothes from blow-outs or barfing (how glamorous). You can even use it as a swim bag to keep wet clothes in!
  2. Medela In-Style Pump  The breast pump is very compact and super efficient! It also comes with a battery-pack so you’re not SOL if you don’t have a power outlet nearby. Also your insurance company should cover the cost of a breast pump, call your insurance to get more information!
  3. Project Social T Hoodie – I LOVE this hoodie. Not only is it super comfy, it makes nursing 100x easier! It has long slits on either side so there easy access for the baby and it kind of works as a cover at the same time. I wear a nursing tank underneath it and it worked great when I was nursing the baby during take-off and landing.
  4. Gerber Burp Clothes – My baby is a messy eater, for some reason milk goes everywhere. These burp clothes always come to the rescue. TMI- my letdown is pretty nuts and in a plane for some reason it was even crazier, these were great to catch the milk so that I didn’t drown my poor baby haha.
  5. Anti-bacterial Wipes – I wipe everything down with wet wipes when I sit down. the arm rests, drop-down table, and anything else the baby might touch. Elara is only 2 months and has just gotten her vaccines so I didn’t want to take any chances! I’m sure it’ll be even more useful when she starts touching and gnawing on everything!
  6. Halo Swaddle Sleepsack – this thing was a LIFESAVER! It kept baby calm and she fell asleep pretty much instantly once we got her in it. She’s been breaking out of her swaddles lately and this sleep sack is great! The velcro is super strong and there is no way my little Houdini can get out of this one!
  7. MAM Pacifier – There were times during the flight were she wanted to comfort suck and these pacifiers came in handy. During our early morning flight she was too tired to eat so I used a pacifier to help keep her ear from popping.
  8. Bebe au Lait Nursing Cover – This is by-far the most used item I own. I use it as a cover up when I’m feeding during take-off and landing, as a blanket, and as a shade cover on her car seat. Super useful and I love that it has a wire top so that you can look at your baby while feeding.
  9. Diaper Clutch/Mat – I have the Vera Bradley diaper clutch (my mom found it on sale for $4.00!) and it’s small and compact. The hubby and I had to change her super quick in between connections so we laid her on the floor at the gate and changed her quickly before boarding our flight. There are small pockets in it to store diapers and travel packs of diaper wipes.
  10. Lotus Travel Crib by Guava Family – We love this travel crib for two reasons. 1) It’s collapsible and set up takes just a few seconds. No worrying about losing any parts! 2) It’s small, compact and weighs only 13 lbs! It even fit under the seats in the plane – super easy to travel with.
