Haldar nu Doodh aka Turmeric Milk

Haldar nu Doodh Turmeric Milk | Milk and Cardamom

Okay, so I caved. After seeing hundreds of recipes of “golden milk” and “turmeric tonic” I decided to share my mother’s recipe for haldar nu doodh aka turmeric milk. Growing up this haldar nu doodh was the bain of my existence. The OG version of haldar nu doodh is 1 tsp of turmeric in 1 cup of warm milk. Simple, but not very tasty. Now that it has gotten popular people have been adding sweeteners to it to make it more palatable.

I was inspired to share my recipe because I partnered with my favorite dairy brand Clover Sonoma, to talk about their new Non-GMO Lactose Free Milk! (P.S.  It’s rBST-free, non-GMO and American Humane Certified). I picked it up from my local Mollie Stone’s and my mind kept going back to my mom’s haldar nu doodh.

I actually am lactose intolerant, which means that my body doesn’t produce enough lactase enzyme to fully break down lactose, a natural sugar, in milk. For a long time I’d have to buy Clover Sonoma milk (I like to buy local milk) for my family and then a separate quart of lactose free milk (from another brand) for myself. Thankfully, that’s no longer the case thanks to Clover’s new Non-GMO Lactose Free Milk!

Back to my story, my mom decided to add some thandai masala to my haldar nu doodh to make it tasty and get me to drink it. And, it worked! Thandai masala is made of ground nuts and spices. I used the thandai masala recipe from my Thandai Panna Cotta post. It makes such a huge difference. It’s slightly sweet but the cardamom, nutmeg, and other spices — you get the stunning color and health benefits from the turmeric, but none of the bitterness.

I love having a big mug of this when it’s rainy and chilly outside, or at night before I go to bed when I’m feeling like a cold might be coming on. It really does make a difference! Also, all you need is a ¼ tsp of turmeric. Every turmeric latte I’ve had has had spoonfuls of turmeric in them, making them gritty and gross. A little bit goes a long way when it comes to turmeric.
